Bhubaneswar: On charges of demanding and accepting a bribe of ₹30,000 from an NGO functionary in exchange for signing work certificates of employees engaged by the organization, an Assistant Surgeon of Capital Hospital, Bhubaneswar has been apprehended by the Odisha Vigilance.

The accused, Dr. Satyajit Behera, allegedly demanded the bribe to sign the work certificates of NGO employees so that their salaries for June and July 2026 could be released.

The NGO had been engaged by Capital Hospital to assist unknown and destitute patients visiting the Casualty department for treatment. According to Odisha Vigilance, the NGO functionary had been requesting Dr. Behera to sign the work certificates since June 2026. However, the Assistant Surgeon allegedly demanded ₹30,000 for the purpose.

Following the alleged demand, the NGO functionary approached the Vigilance authorities. A trap was subsequently laid, and a team of Odisha Vigilance apprehended Dr. Behera while he was allegedly accepting the bribe from the complainant.

The entire tainted amount of ₹30,000 was recovered from Dr. Behera's possession and seized.

Following the trap, simultaneous searches are being conducted at three locations linked to Dr. Behera as part of an investigation into alleged possession of assets disproportionate to his known sources of income.

In connection with the case, Bhubaneswar Vigilance Police Station Case No. 19, dated August 16, 2026, has been registered under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Act, 2018.

Further investigation is underway.
