Baripada: Police have detained a youth after a Class IX girl was found to be around five months pregnant in Mayurbhanj district, following a complaint by her family.

The incident reportedly took place under the jurisdiction of Badsaahi Police Station.

According to the complaint, a youth from the girl’s neighbourhood allegedly sexually assaulted her against her will during the summer vacation when she was alone at home. The family also alleged the girl was threatened with dire consequences if she revealed the incident to anyone.

After the vacation, the girl returned to her school hostel. Earlier this week, a medical examination reportedly revealed she was pregnant, following which the school authorities informed her family.

The family subsequently took her for another medical examination, which reportedly confirmed  she was around five months pregnant.

After learning about the alleged incident from the girl, her family lodged a written complaint at Badsaahi Police Station.

Police registered a case and detained the youth named in the complaint, identified as Ravindra Singh, for questioning.

Further investigation into the case is underway.
