Udala (Mayurbhanj): The Udala Police in Mayurbhanj district have busted an organised theft racket, arresting a man from Kanakpada village who allegedly involved his minor son and relatives in a series of burglaries.

According to police, the accused, Barun Bindhani, used his minor son, his brother-in-law’s son, and a neighbour’s child to carry out thefts in different areas. Explaining the modus operandi, police said the group would survey localities and target locked houses, fleeing with valuables.

The stolen jewellery was later sold at a shop in Nilgiri. The accused reportedly earned over ₹4,00,000 from the thefts.

Investigations revealed Bindhani used the stolen money to purchase a car. He would travel with family members to sell the looted items, creating an appearance of legitimacy. Police also said a portion of the stolen money was spent on gambling.

So far, Udala police have cracked five theft cases and arrested five persons, including three minors, in connection with the crimes.

The owner of a jewellery shop in Nilgiri, identified as Hara Govinda Rana, has also been arrested for allegedly purchasing stolen ornaments. Police have recovered stolen jewellery from his shop.

During the operation, police seized five bank passbooks, a car, two motorcycles, and four mobile phones.

Officials added several cases are already pending against the accused at Khunta, Udala, and Kaptipada police stations.

Two other suspects, reportedly the accused’s nephew and minor daughter, are currently absconding. Further investigation is underway.
