Bhubaneswar: An undertrial prisoner (UTP), who escaped from the Sundargarh District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) on August 25, was arrested by police on Sunday.

The UTP, identified as Tekchand Behera (33), was arrested from the Sundargarh Sadar police station area, said the cops.

Behera had been nabbed by the Sundargarh Sadar police in April this year on charges of murdering his friend. After his bail plea was rejected by the court, he was lodged as an UTP in the Sundargarh district jail.

Behera was admitted to the Sundargarh DHH on August 25 after he developed diarrhoea. However, he allegedly managed to evade the guards and escaped from the hospital premises on the pretext of using the toilet on the same day.

Following the incident, special police teams were formed and searches were conducted at several locations within Sundargarh district as well as outside. The cops nabbed Behera from Sundargarh Sadar area on Sunday, five days after his escape from the hospital.

It is worth mentioning here that the authorities had suspended jail warder Saumya Ranjan Karan and initiated departmental proceedings against another warder soon after Behera’s escape from the hospital.
