Sambalpur: A firing incident in Burla of Odisha’s Sambalpur district left a 36-year-old man dead on Saturday, with police detaining the accused and seizing the weapon allegedly used in the crime.

The deceased has been identified as Md. Anish. According to preliminary information, Anish sustained multiple gunshot injuries, with reports indicating that he was shot three times near Kirba Chowk in Burla.

Police said the preliminary investigation suggests that the incident stemmed from a personal dispute and a longstanding grievance between the individuals involved. The accused, identified as Raja Swami of Mangala Bazar in Jharsuguda, has been detained at Burla Police Station.

The weapon allegedly used in the firing has also been seized, police said.

Anish had reportedly previously operated a meat shop near PC Bridge and was also involved in land transactions. There are suspicions that a dispute linked to the business and land dealings may have played a role in the incident. However, police have not officially confirmed the motive.

Reports also suggested that the meat shop had been demolished by the Sambalpur Municipal Corporation (SMC) a few days ago. The circumstances surrounding the demolition and whether it had any connection with the firing are being examined.

Police are continuing their investigation and questioning the detained suspect to establish the exact sequence of events and motive behind the killing.

Authorities said the incident appears to be limited to a personal dispute between the parties involved and that there is currently no indication of any random or wider threat to the general public.
