Depression intensifies; rains expected over Odisha from Dec 10 to 13

The depression over the southeast Bay of Bengal has moved slightly northward during the past six hours and lay centered over the southeast Bay of Bengal about 1210 km south-southeast of Gopalpur at 5.30 PM today according  to the Meteorological Centre here.

The system is very likely to move nearly northward for next 12 hrs and then northwestwards towards Andhra Pradesh coast during subsequent four days. It is very likely to intensify into a deep depression during next 24 hrs and into a cyclonic storm in subsequent 24 hrs, the Centre said.

Under its influence, rains likely over south and coastal Odisha from December 11-13, it added.

The Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) has yesterday issued an alert to District Collectors to keep a watch on the developing weather situation and advise farmers to keep their harvested paddy under cover to avoid damage from rainfall due to depression over the Bay of Bengal. The SRC had also emphasized on the protection of paddy lying in market yards from rains.
