Bhubaneswar: The conjoined twins with two heads and a single torso, born at the MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Odisha's Berhampur on October 11, died at the hospital during treatment today.

The baby was born to a couple from Gummu Gram Panchayat under Tumudibandh block in Kandhamal district. The rare condition, medically known as dicephalic parapagus, involves conjoined twins with two heads attached to a shared body.

The baby was born prematurely through a Caesarean section when the mother, a 22-year-old woman, was over 32 weeks into her first pregnancy. The newborn weighed 2.25 kg at birth.

Following delivery, the baby was admitted to the hospital's Special Newborn Care Unit (SNCU), where doctors monitored his vital parameters, including breathing and heart rate.

According to the information available, the baby had a single heart, making surgical intervention particularly challenging. The shared body and internal organs posed significant medical complications.

Cases of dicephalic parapagus are extremely rare, and the chances of survival depend on the development and functioning of vital organs, the extent of organ sharing and the presence of other abnormalities.
