Jajpur: Floodwater from the Baitarani River has triggered a fresh breach in the Kani, a distributary of the Baitarani, leaving large areas of Dasarathpur block in Odisha's Jajpur district inundated.
The breach, which occurred on Friday morning, is reportedly at the same spot where an embankment breach had developed during the flood on July 28. Following the fresh breach, the entire Tarapada and Kasapa panchayats have been submerged, while floodwater has once again entered the Ahiyas market area.
The region has been receiving rain for the past four days due to the depression, with rainfall continuing on Friday. The persistent rain and rising floodwater have caused severe difficulties for locals.
According to reports, the breach had remained a major concern since July 28, as floodwater repeatedly flowed through the damaged stretch for nearly 45 days. The Water Resources Department managed to close the breach on September 7.
However, the embankment has given way again. The newly breached stretch is now more than 100 feet long, allowing floodwater to flow into nearby villages and low-lying areas.
Locals have alleged that poor-quality repair work may have contributed to the recurrence of the breach. The fresh inundation has raised concerns among residents, who are already struggling with the impact of continuous rain and repeated flooding.
