Bhubaneswar: In the wake of the ammonia gas leakage at a seafood processing factory in Tamil Nadu that claimed 15 lives, the Odisha Government on Monday directed Deputy Directors of Factories and Boilers to conduct urgent safety inspections of seafood processing units across the state.

In a letter issued by the Directorate of Factories and Boilers, officials have been instructed to carry out immediate spot inspections of all such factories to assess existing safety measures.

The inspections will be conducted by teams comprising at least two officers — the Divisional Deputy Director of Factories and Boilers (DDF&B) and the Zonal Assistant Director of Factories and Boilers (ADF&B). They have been asked to submit their reports within a week.

The report will detail the current safety mechanisms in place and recommend additional measures that need to be implemented within a stipulated timeframe.

The directive follows the tragic ammonia gas leak on June 21, 2026, at the St Peter and Paul Seafood Export Company in Thiruvallur, Tamil Nadu, which resulted in 15 deaths, including five workers from Odisha.
