Odisha Police officer accused of sexual assault in Nayagarh suspended

Cuttack: Following allegations of sexual assault levelled against Sujit Kumar Das, former Inspector-in-Charge (IIC) of Sarankul Police Station, the Director General of Police (DGP) of Odisha, YB Khurania, has suspended him.

The action comes after a woman filed a complaint accusing Das of sexual assault. At the time of suspension, Das was attached to the District Police Office (DPO) in Nayagarh.

According to official sources, disciplinary proceedings have been initiated against him on charges of misconduct and dereliction of duty. The suspension takes immediate effect, and during this period, he will remain under the disciplinary control of the Inspector General (IG) of Police, Central Range, Cuttack.

The complainant, identified as Kuni Behera, a resident of Jamusahi village, lodged her complaint at Sarankul Police Station. Based on her complaint, a case (Sarankul PS Case No. 133 dated June 17, 2026) was registered under Sections 64(1), 74, and 351(3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

On June 18, Odisha Police directed the Crime Against Women and Children Wing (CAW&CW) to take over the investigation. Deputy Superintendent of Police Sanghamitra Nayak has been assigned to probe the case.

Earlier, a preliminary inquiry into the matter was conducted by the Additional SP of the Investigation Unit for Crimes Against Women (IUCAW).

Further investigation is underway.
