Bhubaneswar: The authorities of Rajendra University in Odisha’s Balangir district have cancelled the student union polls due to concerns over the law and order situation.

The Registrar of Rajendra University issued an order in this regard on Wednesday.

The authorities cancelled the student union elections after receiving inputs on the prevailing law and order situation from the district administration.

A decision regarding the cancellation of the student union polls at the varsity was taken at a meeting convened by the Vice Chancellor (VC) on Wednesday, said an official.

“In view of the prevailing law and order situation, as reflected in various media reports and inputs received from the district administration, and pursuant to the decision taken in the emergent meeting held in the office of the Vice Chancellor, Rajendra University, Balangir, the proposed Students’ Union Election will not be held as announced,” read the order.

It is worth mentioning here that student union elections in universities and colleges across the state are being held after a gap of nine years.

The polls are scheduled to be held on October 15 (Thursday). Several student outfits including the ABVP, NSUI and BCJD have fielded candidates for the campus elections.
