Bhubaneswar: An undertrial prisoner (UTP) was found hanging under mysterious circumstances at a jail in Odisha’s Puri district today.

The deceased has been identified as Dipti Ranjan Swain of Dahana Kumbharpara in Sakhigopal area of Puri district.

Swain had been arrested and sent to jail in connection with a rape case in 2023.

The UTP was found hanging on the premises of Puri District Jail on Sunday. On being informed, the police reached the spot and seized the body before sending it for postmortem at Puri District Headquarters Hospital (DHH).

The deceased’s family members, meanwhile, alleged that he was murdered inside the jail. They urged the administration to launch a probe into the incident.
