Bonai: The 2026 students' union election at Jadupati Degree College in Shihidia, under Odisha's Bonai subdivision, was cancelled amid fears of possible clashes during the polling process.
The decision left several students disappointed as they arrived at the college to cast their votes, unaware that the election had been called off.
According to a notice issued by the office of the college principal, the students' union election scheduled for October 15 was cancelled on the orders of the Bonai Sub-Collector, who is the competent authority in election-related matters.
The notice, dated October 14, confirmed the cancellation of the election. The decision was reportedly taken in view of the possibility of a disturbance on the campus during polling.
However, despite the notice being issued on the previous evening, many students allegedly remained unaware of the development. They turned up at the college on the scheduled polling day, only to learn that the election would not take place.
The cancellation reportedly triggered resentment and confusion among students, many of whom had arrived on campus expecting to exercise their voting rights.
Meanwhile, no information has been provided so far regarding a fresh date for the students' union election.
