Bhubaneswar: A trader was allegedly beaten to death at Gayatri Basti under the Lingaraj police station limits in Bhubaneswar late on Thursday night. Police have launched an investigation into the murder, while the motive behind the crime is yet to be established.

The deceased has been identified as Jitu Kandi, who was a local trader. His blood-soaked body was found near his shop on Friday morning. Preliminary investigation suggests that he died after suffering severe head injuries.

Police reached the spot after receiving information about the incident and began an investigation. The body has been sent for post-mortem, and forensic evidence is being collected from the crime scene.

According to locals, Jitu operated a paan shop in the area. Some locals also alleged that he collected money from nearby establishments. Police are examining whether an argument over such issues on Thursday night led to the fatal assault.

Jitu was reportedly consuming alcohol with four other persons on Thursday night before the incident. Three individuals, identified as Gangadhar Behera, Chagu, and Babuna Behera, have been detained and are being questioned. Another suspect, Gopal Das, is currently absconding.

Police are also looking into allegations that Jitu was involved in the illegal liquor trade in the locality. His shop had been shut down earlier by the police, but he had reportedly resumed operations. Investigators are examining whether the murder was linked to events that unfolded after the group consumed alcohol on Thursday night.
