Baripada: In a shocking incident, a woman allegedly attacked her mother-in-law with a sharp weapon over suspicion of witchcraft in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district.

According to reports, the incident took place in Ward No. 6 of Udala NAC. The victim, identified as Savitri Dutta, was sitting outside her house last evening when her daughter-in-law, Mami Dutta, suddenly dragged her inside the house.

The accused first assaulted Savitri with a stick and then repeatedly attacked her with a sharp weapon. Mami allegedly attempted to kill Savitri by striking her on the head and other parts of the body.

Hearing Savitri’s cries, neighbours rushed to the spot, rescued her, and informed the police. She was later shifted to a hospital in critical condition.

Udala police have started an investigation into the matter after detaining the accused for questioning. 

The victim has alleged that the attack was carried out on suspicion of practising witchcraft.
