Man gets life imprisonment for killing son in Odisha’s Sundargarh

Bhubaneswar: A court in Odisha’s Sundargarh district today sentenced a man to life imprisonment for killing his son three years ago.

The court of Additional District Judge in Sundargarh also slapped a penalty of Rs 10,000 on convict Karmu Miri (60) of Runagaon Badapada under Bargaon police limits in Sundargarh.

Non-payment of the penalty amount will invite further imprisonment for six months, said the court.

As per the case records, Karmu had attacked his son Shyamsundar with an axe while the latter was asleep in their house on January 1, 2021. Shyamsundar had sustained grievous injuries on his head and other parts of the body in the attack.

Karmu had also attacked his wife Leelabati when she tried to intervene.

The locals had rescued Shyamsundar and rushed him to a hospital at Bargaon in a critical condition. However, he was declared dead on arrival by the doctor.

The police had arrested Karmu after registering a case in this regard as per an FIR lodged by Leelabati. The cops had filed chargesheet against the accused on May 1, 2021.

The court has convicted Karmu after examining 16 witnesses and other evidence to the case, said APP Prashant Kumar Patel.
