Bhubaneswar: The Commissionerate Police today arrested the member of an all-women thievery gang from the Odisha capital here.

The four-member gang was involved in several cases of theft in ‘Mo Buses’ in the capital city.

The accused has been identified as Lajabati Singh of West Bengal, said Zone-6 Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Ramesh Chandra Bisoyi.

All members of the thievery gang are the residents of neighbouring West Bengal. They come to Odisha with the primary motive of stealing money and other valuables from bus passengers, added the DCP.

Members of the thievery gang used to board Mo Buses from Barabunda Bus Terminus in the city here and steal wallets and mobile phones of passengers, revealed the ACP while divulging details regarding the modus operandi of the gang.

Members of the gang had stolen the mobile phone of one Parbati Sahoo while she was travelling in a Mo Bus yesterday afternoon.

Parbati had lodged a complaint in this regard with Chandrasekharpur police. Soon after receiving the complaint, the police had detained Lajabati for questioning after verifying the CCTV camera footage from the Mo Bus. Lajabati was subsequently arrested in connection with the case. A mobile phone was also seized from her possession, said the ACP.

“Steps are being taken to nab the remaining three members of the thievery gang,” he added.
