Bhubaneswar: A court in Odisha capital here today awarded life imprisonment to a person after convicting him in a triple murder case in Khandagiri area of the city in 2014.

Additional Sessions Judge, Bhubaneswar, Debasis Rout, convicted accused Sneha Shawkhar Samal under Sections 302,307 and 450 of the IPC.

The judge sentenced the convict to rigorous imprisonment for life under Section 302 of the IPC. He also slapped a penalty of Rs 10,000 on the convict. Non-payment of the penalty amount would invite further imprisonment for one year.

Similarly, the convict was awarded seven years of rigorous imprisonment under Sections 307 and 450 of the IPC. The court also imposed a penalty of Rs 5,000 on him. As per the verdict, the convict will undergo rigorous imprisonment for additional six months if he fails to pay the amount.

Atulya Chandra Meher, an orthopaedic surgeon, his house caretaker Prasant Chandra Behera and the latter’s son Minu Behera were stabbed to death by Samal in Khandagiri area of the city on October 14, 2014.

Prasant’s wife Runu Behera had sustained grievous injuries in the incident. The locals had captured the accused and handed him over to police.

The accused had confessed to the crime during police interrogation.

The court convicted the accused after examining 26 witnesses and 64 documents. The jail terms awarded to the convict under various Sections of the IPC will run concurrently, said Additional Public Prosecutor Chandrakanta Das.
