Bhubaneswar: Congress MLA from Odisha’s Koraput – Krishna Chandra Sagaria – is all set to embrace Buddhism for which he had sought district administration’s approval for religious conversion.

“Buddhism preaches wisdom, friendship and equality. Babasaheb Ambedkar had said that if you want to establish equality in society and acquire erudition, then you should adopt Buddhism. Inspired by his teachings, I along with my family members will embrace Buddhism in the next two days,” Sagaria said.

As per sources, the elected representative, his family members and around 50 villagers have submitted an affidavit before Executive Magistrate, Koraput for conversion to Buddhism from Hinduism.

Sources revealed that he had also met Swami Agnivesh and reportedly discussed about religion change. The latter is said to have guided his decision.

Notably, Odisha is the first state to frame 'Orissa Freedom of Religion Act, 1967' to put a check on forceful conversions.

The MLA was elected to the 15th Assembly from Koraput segment on a reserved (scheduled caste) seat.
