Bhubaneswar: A girl student of Sambalpur University in Odisha allegedly died by suicide after her lover refused to marry her.

The deceased has been identified as Deepa Pradhan of Tipilei village under Bhuban police limits in Dhenkanal district. The girl was pursuing undergraduate (UG) in English Honours under Sambalpur University.

Deepa was reportedly in a relationship with one Chintu Dalei of her village. The two families, in the presence of some villagers, had finalized to conduct the wedding ceremony for the duo in last winter.

However, Chintu later urged the girl’s family to reschedule the wedding ceremony so that his family could finish the construction of a new house. Deepa’s family gave its consent in this regard.

Around four days ago, Chintu called Deepa over phone and refused to marry her. Unable to bear the mental depression, Deepa allegedly ended her life by hanging herself from a ceiling fan in her house yesterday.

Deepa’s family members reportedly found that the names of Chintu and another girl and their phone numbers were written on her palm.

Bhuban police have registered a case on the basis of a complaint lodged by Deepa’s father and launched a probe into the incident.
