Bhubaneswar: Hitting out at BJP MP Bhartruhari Mahtab for his criticism of Biju Janata Dal (BJD) President and Leader of Opposition Naveen Patnaik, the Opposition party in Odisha on Wednesday termed his remarks politically motivated.

The party said Patnaik had only appealed for a resolution to the ongoing student agitation in New Delhi through democratic dialogue, instead of forceful police action. The BJD chief had also criticised Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over alleged exam irregularities.

Addressing the media at Sankha Bhawan, BJD senior vice president Debi Prasad Mishra and vice president and senior media coordinator Pratap Jena said Patnaik had condemned what he described as “inhuman” police action against students protesting peacefully in Delhi.

They alleged Mahtab’s comments against Patnaik were made with clear political intent and were “highly objectionable”. Mishra further said instead of addressing the legitimate concerns of students, the Centre remained silent, allowing the situation to escalate.

He added when the government fails to manage the education system effectively, the concerned minister should take moral responsibility and consider stepping down on ethical grounds.

Jena clarified Patnaik’s statement was not politically motivated but a call for the Centre to engage with students and resolve the issue through democratic means.

The BJD also questioned Mahtab’s change in stance, noting he had earlier praised Patnaik during his tenure as a BJD MP. The party demanded Mahtab withdraw his remarks and issue an unconditional public apology.
