Severe heatwave alert issued for 9 Odisha districts

Bhubaneswar: In just 10 days after the landfall of Cyclone FANI in Odisha, several areas in the coastal part of the state may bear the brunt of heatwave.

According to a weather bulletin issued by Odisha State Disaster Management Authority (OSDMA), heatwave and severe heat wave alert has been issued in 15 districts of the state.

Maximum temperature forecast for five days (May 12 to May 16) predicts that Balasore (Nilagiri block), Bhadrak (Bhandaripokhari block), Cuttack (Kantapada and Nischintakoili blocks), Gajapati (Gumma, Kasinagar and Mohana blocks), Ganjam (Aska, Chhatrapur, Hinjilicut, Kukudakhandi, Purusottampur and Sorada blocks), Jagatsinghpur (Balikuda, Jagatsinghpur, Kujang and Naugaon blocks), Kendrapara (Kendrapara, Mahakalpada, Marsaghai and Pattamundai blocks), Puri (Brahmagiri, Gop and Pipili blocks) and Rayagada (Gunupur and Padmapur blocks) will boil due to severe heatwave as daily maximum temperature will cross the 40 degree Celsius mark and exceed 7 degrees Celsius when compared to the daily average.

Similarly, Angul (Palalahada block), Balasore (Bhograi, Nilagiri and Oupada blocks), Cuttack (Athagad block), Ganjam (Polasara block), Jajpur (Bari, Dasrathpur and Dharmasala blocks), Kendrapara (Rajkanika block), Keonjhar (Hatadihi block), Khordha (Bolagad block), Mayurbhanj (Baripada, Bisoi and Tiring blocks), Nayagarh (Bhapur and Khandapada blocks) and Puri (Kanas block) will reel under the impact of heatwave as mercury will rise above 40 degree Celsius and exceed 5 degrees Celsius.

Warnings have been issued for the general public to stay indoors, not venture out between 12 noon and 3 pm, avoid strenuous activities outside in the afternoon , drink sufficient water, and other liquid supplements to stay hydrated, keep animals in shade and give them plenty of water to drink.

Similarly, workers have been cautioned to avoid direct sunlight, increase length of of rest breaks if working outside, schedule strenuous jobs during cooler times of the day and drink sufficient cool water.
