Bhubaneswar: A court in Odisha’s Sundargarh district today sentenced a woman to 10 years of imprisonment for killing her lover in 2017.

Sundargarh district and sessions judge Shubhadarshi Patnaik also slapped a penalty of Rs 5,000 on convict Kuni Barlia. Non-payment of the penalty amount will invite additional jail terms for two months, said the judge in his verdict.

As per the case records, Kuni, a resident of Jaramal in Sundargarh was in a relationship with Sanjiv Dandasena of nearby Bandhapali for around a year.

Sanjiv had kept physical relation with Kuni on the promise of marriage. However, he ditched Kuni and decided to marry another woman.

Subsequently, Kuni hatched a plot to kill Sanjiv. She had invited Sanjiv to meet her at Sundargarh town June 6, 2017.

Kuni had managed to lure Sanjiv to an isolated place near Sundargarh town on the pretext of keeping physical relation.

She had slit Sanjiv’s throat and smashed his head with a stone after tying his hands and legs while keeping physical relation with the latter. Sanjiv died on the spot.

The police had recovered Sanjiv’s body on June 7, 2017.

The court convicted Kuni after examining the witnesses and other evidence to the case, said public prosecutor Dillip Kumar Murmu.
