According to reports, a servitor was guiding a group of tourists from Sambalpur for the darshan of the deities in the 12th century shrine. However, a Yatri Gumasta (pilgrim escort) Madhusudan Panda intercepted them near sata pahacha or seven steps, outside the northern door of the natamandapa (dancing hall) and claimed territorial right to escort the tourists for darshan.

After an altercation, a bloody brawl ensued between him and a group of servitors leaving the former profusely bleeding.

On the other hand, Panda alleged that he was attacked by the cousins of the servitors.

Meanwhile, he has been admitted to Puri District Headquarters Hospital for treatment.
