Bhubaneswar: A most wanted leader of the Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) Red Star, West Bengal, has been arrested from a private hospital here this evening, police said.

Alik Chakraborty, a politburo member of small Naxalite outfit CPI (ML) (Red Star), was nabbed in a joint raid of Odisha Police and West Bengal Police.

Chakraborty, against whom around 70 cases were pending at various police stations in the neighbouring state, came to Kalinga Hospital here for treatment where the cops pounced on him.

"We were informed about Alik's movements by West Bengal police and their personnel had been camping here for past few days. Soon after he reached hospital, the cops captured him," said Police Commissioner Y B Khurania without divulging further details about the red rebel.

The West Bengal police is likely to take Chakraborty on transit remand after producing him in court here.

The special task force of the CID has been desperately looking for Chakraborty, the face of movement in Bhangar against a power grid, since violence broke out at Bhangar five weeks ago. Booked under provisions of the UA (P)A, Chakraborty has been evading the police while organising the movement through his network.
