Sambalpur: A wild elephant and her calf were rescued after falling into an abandoned well here in the district this morning.

The incident was reported from Hatibari cold storage area under Jujumara block in Sambalpur.

According to reports, the mother and baby elephant duo had fallen into a well located near a cold storage on Saturday night. After hours of struggle, the jumbo and her calf could not be able to come out of the well.

The locals spotted them in the well on Sunday morning and informed the forest officials.

On receiving information, the forest officials rushed to the spot and safely rescued them after three-hour long operation.

However, the panicked wild elephants damaged two motorcycles and five bicycles on their way to the forest after spending a chaotic night inside the well.
