Jawan from Odisha martyred in militant ambush in Manipur

Sambalpur: An Assam Rifles Jawan from Odisha was killed by armed militants during combing operation in Manipur.

The martyr was identified as Champeswar Mahakud (37), a resident of Dhaurakhaman village under Rairakhol block of Sambalpur district.

He was posted at Joupi in Chandel district of Manipur.

According to reports, Champeswar was shot dead during fire exchange with the banned People's Liberation Army (PLA) militants on Friday. He was part of the team of personnel in the combing operation.

Champeswar, the youngest son of Suranchi Mahakud, had joined the Assam Rifles in 2001. He is survived by his wife Madhusmita and eight-year-old son Debjit.

Champeswar's body will reach his ancestral village Dhaurakhaman today.
