Bhubaneswar: Three of the five infant orangutans, rescued from a forest in Odisha’s Baleshwar district and quarantined at Nandankanan Zoological Park (NZP), are suffering from anemia, said the zoo authorities on Wednesday.
“In house hematology analysis showed severe anemia in one orangutan and mild anemia in two others,” revealed the health bulletin issued by the NZP.
As per the advice of the technical committee, supportive supplementation for the three orangutan babies has already been started, said the NZP.
The veterinary officials at NZP, meanwhile, revealed that the body temperatures and other vital health indicators of the five baby orangutans were found to be normal during the routine check-up on Wednesday.
Earlier in the day, the five-member technical committee, constituted by the Forest Department, visited the hand-rearing centre at NZP and assessed the health conditions of the rescued orangutans.
During the check-up, the committee took x-ray images of chest, abdomen and skull of each of the baby orangutans and collected blood, serum and naso-pharyngeal swabs for laboratory tests.
Earlier, there were reports that one of the five orangutans had developed fever. However, its condition improved after medication.
It is worth mentioning here that the five baby orangutans were rescued from a forest in Baleshwar district on September 8.
The wildlife wing of the Forest Department has constituted a five-member technical committee assess the health of the rescued orangutans and suggest measures for their proper upkeep.
