Bargarh: In a major development ahead of the 2026-27 edition of the world-famous Bargarh Dhanu Yatra, actor Sushil Meher has decided to step aside from playing the role of Maharaj Kans for one year.
Meher, who was selected to portray the mythological demon king Kans for the 2025-26 Dhanu Yatra, has submitted a letter seeking a one-year break to Bargarh Collector and Dhanu Yatra Mahotsav Samiti president Aditya Goyal.
The actor said he would be willing to return to the arena in the future if the Dhanu Yatra Mahotsav Samiti gives him another opportunity.
Meher said he took the decision after controversies surrounding his performance caused him mental distress. He alleged the controversy had been created by vested-interest groups.
As per the existing practice, an actor selected to play Kans is expected to continue in the role for three years. However, Meher's performance during the previous edition triggered criticism and controversy, with demands for his replacement emerging from various committees.
At the first meeting of the Dhanu Yatra Mahotsav Samiti held recently, several committees reportedly raised the demand to replace Meher. The Samiti had asked him to communicate his decision within 15 days.
However, before the deadline, Meher himself submitted his request to take a break from the iconic role for the 2026-27 edition.
His decision has now raised questions over who will portray Kans in the upcoming Dhanu Yatra, scheduled to be held from January 12 to 22.
With limited time remaining before the festival, attention has turned to the selection process. It remains to be seen whether the Samiti will conduct a fresh selection or choose one of the performers who featured in the top five during last year's Kans selection process.
