Udala: A tragic incident in Mayurbhanj district claimed the lives of a brother and his divyang sister after both were swept away in strong currents while the sister attempted to rescue her brother.

The incident occurred last night in Malharpada village under Khunta police limits.

According to reports, Parameswar Nayak was swept away near a canal close to his house. Seeing him being carried away by the strong current, Nandini Nayak, his differently-abled sister, entered the canal in an attempt to rescue him.

However, Parameswar reportedly drowned in the water, while Nandini was swept away by the strong current of the Nalhua River.

Nandini's body was later recovered near the Karkachia bridge, around one kilometre downstream from their house.

The Khunta Fire Services team subsequently recovered both bodies. Khunta police have started an investigation into the incident.
