Bhubaneswar: Heavy rain and strong winds caused by Cyclone 'Arnab' have caused widespread damage in Odisha’s Gajapati district, with roads blocked by fallen trees, rising water levels in rivers and canals, and several areas cut off. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for the district for Wednesday.
One of the major incidents was the collapse of the Gundriguda bridge in Mohana block, leaving residents of four villages on the other side of the river worried about their safety and connectivity.
In Rayagada block, a massive tree fell on three houses in Kumunda village under Lailai Gram Panchayat, completely destroying the houses.
Roads blocked, connectivity disrupted
Around 30 locations across the district were affected by fallen trees, which disrupted the movement of vehicles. Fire services personnel have been deployed to remove the fallen trees and restore connectivity.
Road connectivity between Kaipur-Burkhata and Mahendragiri was disrupted after around three feet of water flowed over the road. Similarly, rising water levels in the Kaithadhepa canal in R. Udayagiri block have cut off connectivity between Kanakata and Puranapani.
Main road between Rayagada and Paralakhemundi blocked
In Rayagada block, fallen trees disrupted traffic at several locations, including Badaputtar village. Fire services personnel reached the affected areas and cleared obstructions.
A tree also fell near the Kanta Sagar embankment close to Hatapada, blocking the main road connecting Rayagada with Paralakhemundi.
Meanwhile, a minor landslide occurred at Regedising in Rayagada block. However, traffic remained normal, and no damage was reported from the incident.
Three houses completely destroyed
Rayagada block has reported significant damage due to the cyclone. In Kumunda village under Lailai Gram Panchayat, a huge tree fell on three residential houses, completely destroying them.
With heavy rain continuing and water levels rising in local rivers and streams, several areas remain vulnerable to further disruption. Fire services personnel are continuing restoration work to clear roads and bring transport services back to normal.
