Balasore/Berhampur: Flood concerns have mounted in Odisha and put river levels under scrutiny with Jalaka and Rushikulya rivers crossing their respective danger marks in the wake of Cyclone Arnab. The rising water levels have also raised concerns over possible submerging of low-lying areas along the rivers.
In Basta block of Balasore district, the Jalaka river was flowing at 6.58 metres at Mathani, exceeding its danger mark of 6.50 metres by 8 cm. Similarly, the Rushikulya river crossed its danger mark near Purushottampur in Ganjam district, with the water level recorded at 18.280 metres against the danger mark of 16.835 metres. The river was flowing 1.445 metres above the prescribed threshold, indicating a more significant rise beyond its danger level.
With both rivers flowing above their danger marks, the risk of inundation has emerged as a key concern amid Cyclone Arnab. Areas along the river banks, particularly low-lying settlemets, have been put on alert over possible inundation if the water levels continue to rise.
State remains vigilant
While the State remains watchful of the impact of Cyclone Arnab, the rise in water levels of rivers has now warranted close monitoring of the evolving situation.
On Thursday, Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari informed that around 42,500 people have been affected by floods in Ganjam district. To facilitate the evacuation of people stranded in flood-hit areas, 16 government boats and 25 privately owned boats have been pressed into service, the minister said.
