Berhampur: A 32-year-old man died after allegedly being thrashed by cops at the Kabisuryanagar police station in Odisha's Ganjam district late last night.
The deceased has been identified as Sushant Sahu, a resident of Subulia village under Kabisuryanagar police limits. According to family members, Sahu was picked up by police in connection with a case. He was allegedly subjected to severe physical assault at the police station.
As per allegations, Sushant worked at a local stone quarry where he was recently involved in a dispute. He was picked up by the police on May 25 in connection with the matter.
As Sushant's health deteriorated following the alleged assault, he was initially admitted to Aska Hospital for treatment and later shifted to the MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur after his condition turned critical. Doctors at the hospital declared him dead.
Aska Hospital's Medical Officer, Bal Gopal Behera, said, "Sushant was brought to the hospital by police around 12.23 AM in a critical condition. There were marks of injury on several parts of his body, including chest. After primary treatment, we referred him to the MKCG Hospital."
The family has accused the police of custodial torture and held the cops responsible for the death. The incident has triggered outrage among locals.
Police have sent the body for post-mortem examination to ascertain the exact cause of death. An investigation into the incident is currently underway.
"A probe is underway to ascertain the involvement of those in the alleged custodial torture. The allegation regarding the man being detained at the police station for six days is also under investigation. As per norms, an accused can't be kept at a police station for more than 24 hours. He was taken to the hospital after he complained of vomiting and gastritis," said Ganjam SP Harisha BC.
