Bhubaneswar: A court in Odisha’s Angul district today sentenced a man to life imprisonment till death for raping a minor girl two years ago.

The Special Fast Track Court, Angul, also slapped a penalty of Rs 50,000 on convict Chandrakant Mallick, a native of Rourkela in Sundargarh district.

As per the case records, Mallick had allegedly raped a 17-year-old girl several times at a rented accommodation in Rajkishorepara area of Angul in June, 2024.

The victim had lodged a complaint in this regard with the police. On the basis of the complaint, the cops had registered a case and launched a probe into the incident. They had also filed a chargesheet against Mallick in the court.

The court convicted Mallick after examining eight witnesses and other evidence gathered by the police during the investigation.

In its verdict, the Fast Track Court also asked the authorities concerned to provide Rs 10 lakh as compensation to the rape survivor.
