Koraput: A tragic incident has been reported from Sukraput village under Dasamantpur block in Odisha's Koraput district, where a minor boy allegedly died by suicide after losing money in IPL betting.
According to preliminary information, the boy was found hanging from a tree in a cashew grove near his village on Monday morning. Family members and villagers alerted the police after discovering the body.
Sources said the minor had allegedly transferred Rs 4,000 from his father's PhonePe account and placed a bet on the IPL final match on Sunday. He reportedly lost the money in the betting activity.
It is suspected that the boy was distressed and feared being reprimanded by his father after the unauthorized transaction came to light. Investigators believe this may have led him to take the extreme step.
Police from Dasamantpur reached the spot, recovered the body, and sent it for post-mortem examination at the Dasamantpur Community Health Centre.
A case has been registered, and an investigation is underway to ascertain the exact circumstances surrounding the incident. Police are also examining the alleged online betting transaction and other related aspects.
The death has shocked the local community and once again raised concerns about the growing influence of online betting among young people. Authorities have urged parents and guardians to remain vigilant about children's online activities and access to digital payment platforms.
