Balangir: In a shocking incident, a woman health worker was allegedly beaten and set on fire by her husband in Balangir district, with both later found dead under mysterious circumstances.

The incident took place in Ramchandrapur village under Deogaon police limits. The deceased woman has been identified as Damayanti Barik, an ANM worker of the local health sub-centre.

According to reports, Barik was brutally assaulted by her husband, identified as Upendra Kalsai, before being set ablaze inside their house. Her half-burnt body was found lying inside the house.

The matter came to light on Wednesday morning, following which police rushed to the spot and launched an investigation.

Upendra Kalsai, who was also found with severe burn injuries at the scene, was rescued and shifted to the Bhima Bhoi Medical College and Hospital in Balangir for treatment. However, he later succumbed during treatment, officials said.

The deaths of both husband and wife have added complexity to the case, raising questions about the sequence of events and whether any third party was involved in the incident.

Police are currently investigating all possible angles. Further probe continues.
