Kendrapara: A woman and her son were allegedly subjected to third-degree torture at Talchua Marine Police Station in Odisha’s Kendrapara district.

According to a complaint filed with Pattamundai SDPO, Annapurna Mandal (58), wife of Paban Kumar Mandal of Giriapahi village under Baghamari panchayat, and her son Ananta Kumar Mandal had gone to the police station on May 25 to lodge a complaint over a family dispute.

However, instead of registering their complaint, the police allegedly abused and assaulted them. Annapurna alleged that IIC Sandhyarani Jena abused her, dragged her by the hair, slapped her and wiped off sindoor from her forehead.

She further alleged that her son was taken inside a toilet and brutally beaten by the IIC and a constable. The woman also said that the cops tried to strangle her son.

The complainant claimed that they were threatened not to disclose the assault to anyone. The cops allegedly threatened to implicate them in false cases if they revealed the incident.

She also alleged that police seized Ananta’s mobile phone and forced both of them to sign blank papers. They were reportedly detained and tortured inside the police station from 6 pm till 11:40 pm before being released.

As both were unable to walk due to the assault, family members brought them home in an auto-rickshaw. On Tuesday morning, they were admitted to Rajnagar Community Health Centre for treatment.

Medical examination reportedly revealed injury marks on Annapurna’s hands and on Ananta’s neck, hands, legs and back.

Reacting to the allegations, Pattamundai SDPO Sukanta Kumar Patra said a complaint has been received, and the matter has been brought to the notice of the Superintendent of Police. He said appropriate action would be taken after an investigation.
