Jaipur: Three labourers were killed and three others sustained serious injuries after a structure collapsed at an under-construction resort near Tala Morh on the Delhi Highway under the Chandwaji police station limits in Jaipur district on Monday.
According to the police, the deceased labourers were residents of Bihar. An investigation has been initiated to determine the exact cause of the accident.
Preliminary information suggests that a sewage pit measuring approximately 100 feet in length, 30 feet in width and 20 feet in depth had been excavated at The Palace Aravalli Resort.
Labourers were carrying out repair work inside the pit on Monday while construction activities continued on one side of the resort and backfilling of excavated soil was underway on the other.
During the work, a large section of soil suddenly caved in, burying the labourers working below.
The workers were trapped under the debris before they could escape.
The incident triggered panic at the construction site.
Witnesses reported that the contractor fled the scene following the collapse.
Local villagers alerted the Chandwaji police, following which senior police and administrative officials rushed to the spot.
A rescue operation was launched with the assistance of local residents.
After several hours of clearing the debris, rescue teams retrieved all six trapped labourers.
The injured workers were rushed to the nearby NIMS Hospital, where doctors declared three of them dead.
The remaining three are undergoing treatment for critical injuries.
The bodies have been shifted to the mortuary for post-mortem examination.
Police have registered a case, launched an investigation into the incident and initiated efforts to trace the absconding contractor.
Building collapses often leave little chance for escape, putting workers and residents at grave risk. Unsafe construction practices, poor supervision and ignored safety measures can turn routine work into tragedy. Experts stress that strict monitoring, proper engineering checks and adherence to safety norms are vital to prevent such disasters.
