Shocking! Newly married woman set on fire for dowry in Odisha

Balasore: In a shocking incident, a newly married woman was set on fire by her husband and in-laws today in Odisha’s Balasore district.

The incident occurred at Chilapada village under Remuna Tehsil under Nilagiri police station in the district.

The victim has been identified as Sweety Barik, daughter of Brajendra Barik of Bikhapada village in the district.

Sources said the woman came to out of her house screaming for help. Seeing her writhing with 60 per cent burns, the locals immediately rushed her to Nilagiri Community Health Centre (CHC). The doctors said the woman’s condition is stable.

The newly-wed woman was doused with kerosene and set ablaze by her in-laws demanding a gold chain from her parents, the sources added.

The woman had married to Muktikant Das of Chilapada village under Remuna block in the district three months ago. The trouble began soon after the wedding as his family began demanding gold chain as dowry, the source maintained.

The police has so far neither detained nor arrested anyone in this regard.
