Woman killed, daughter injured as gun goes off ‘accidentally’ in Odisha’s Kalahandi

Bhubaneswar: A woman was killed and her minor daughter was injured when a country-made gun reportedly went off accidentally in Odisha’s Kalahandi district.

The incident took place at Ranpur village of Gunpur panchayat under Thuamul Rampur block in Kalahandi.

The deceased has been identified as Jemadei (39), wife of Bana Majhi of Ranpur.

Jemadei and her 9-year-old daughter were critically injured when the gun went off in the evening hours of June 28 (Friday).

The injured mother-daughter duo was immediately rushed to a hospital at Bhawanipatna. They were later shifted to Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR) at Burla in Sambalpur.

Jemadei died while being treated at VIMSAR on June 29 (Saturday). The condition of her daughter is stated to be stable.

On being informed by the hospital authorities, Karlapat police in Kalahandi have arrested Jemadei’s husband Bana Majhi and launched a probe into the incident after registering a case under Section 307 of the IPC and relevant Sections of the Arms Act.

Jemadei’s daughter, meanwhile, revealed that the country-made gun went off accidently while her father was cleaning it Friday evening. She and her mother had sustained injuries in the incident, revealed the girl.
