Bargarh: A farmer of Malamunda village under Gaisilet block in Odisha's Bargarh district ended his life by consuming poison allegedly due to crop loss after drought accompanied with loan burden.

The incident comes a day after the state government announced drought package for this year.

According to Tulasi Bariha, wife of deceased farmer Indrajit Bariha, he had taken a loan of Rs one lakh from private money lenders for paddy cultivation on five acres of land.

Unfortunately, he suffered crop loss due to drought following which he was under stress about repayment of the loan.

Finding no other way, he attempted to commit suicide by consuming poison on Sunday. He was initially admitted to Padmapur hospital in a critical condition and later shifted to Bargarh district headquarters hospital for better treatment.

However, he took his last breath while undergoing treatment at the hospital this morning.
