Brahmapur: On charges of duping a woman of nearly ₹60 lakh with false promise of marriage after establishing contact through a matrimonial website, the Ganjam Cyber Crime Police has arrested a man.
The accused, identified as Jinu Sahani alias Rakesh Rajput, has been arrested from Goa.
During a press briefing at the cyber crime police station in Chhatrapur, Deputy Superintendent of Police Girija Pattnaik said the accused is a native of Peonpada village in Kandhamal district.
According to police, the complainant, a woman identified as Shraddha Suman Panda from Bhanjanagar, had created a profile on matrimonial platform jeevansathi.com while seeking a partner for remarriage.
Taking advantage of the opportunity, the accused allegedly contacted her by posing as a man named Sai Krupa Das from Bhubaneswar. He subsequently gained her trust by promising to marry her and allegedly extracted money from her by narrating a series of fabricated stories.
Police said the accused sought money on various pretexts, including claiming his father was seriously ill and had subsequently died. He also allegedly claimed to be suffering from psoriasis and sought financial assistance for treatment.
To make his claims appear genuine, the accused allegedly sent fake photographs, conducted video calls and shared forged medical documents with the woman through WhatsApp.
The accused reportedly told the woman that his bank account had been frozen and even took control of her Union Bank account. Believing his claims, the woman allegedly mortgaged her gold jewellery and borrowed money from family members and other people before transferring nearly ₹60 lakh to various bank accounts.
During the investigation, police seized seven mobile phones, seven SIM cards, six chargers, fake rubber stamps, a stamp pad, debit cards, an Aadhaar card, a voter identity card, a railway identity card, a forged court order and a fake State Bank of India (SBI) demand draft receipt from the accused.
Police also recovered ₹2,080 in cash and froze or placed on hold approximately ₹12,31,976 linked to the case.
Investigation revealed the accused was allegedly involved in several other cheating cases and had been operating since 2015 by creating fake identities on matrimonial platforms and targeting women, particularly widows, with promises of marriage.
Police said cases have been registered against him at various police stations in Bhubaneswar, as well as in Konark and the Berhampur Cyber Crime Police Station. The total amount allegedly involved in these cases is estimated to exceed ₹1 crore.
Another accused in the case, identified as Uttam Kumar Sahu alias Miki had been arrested earlier and forwarded to court on August 2, 2026.
Police said the investigation is continuing to establish the full extent of the alleged fraud and the accused’s involvement in other cases.
