Balangir: The Vigilance Court in Balangir on Saturday convicted an Assistant Executive Engineer in a bribery case and sentenced him to four years of rigorous imprisonment (RI), besides imposing a fine.

The Special Judge, Vigilance, Balangir, convicted Chittaranjan Behura, Assistant Executive Engineer (Electrical) in TPWODL’s MRT Rourkela Circle, in connection with the corruption case.

According to Vigilance sources, Behura was charge-sheeted under Sections 13(2) read with 13(1)(d) and Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of ₹8,000 from a beneficiary under the Jalanidhi Yojana.

At the time of the incident, Behura was posted as a Junior Engineer (JE) at the Electrical Section in Binika, Subarnapur district. He had allegedly demanded the bribe to provide regular electricity bills instead of provisional bills for the electricity supplied to a motor pump installed on the beneficiary’s agricultural land.

Following the conviction, Behura was sent to jail to serve his sentence.

Vigilance sources said the anti-corruption unit would move the competent authority to initiate proceedings for his dismissal from government service following the conviction.
