Bhubaneswar: A fresh low pressure area over the south Andaman Sea could develop into a depression by October 31 and move towards the Andhra Pradesh coast in the following days with chances of further intensification, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

In its bulletin issued at 2.30 pm today, the IMD said the low pressure area over the south Andaman Sea and adjoining areas persisted over the same region at 11.30 am. The system is very likely to move west-northwestwards and concentrate into a depression over the southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and the Andaman Sea around October 31.

Thereafter, the system is likely to intensify further and continue moving west-northwestwards towards the Andhra Pradesh coast during the subsequent two days, the weather agency said.

However, the bulletin did not officially confirm that the system will develop into a cyclone. Its further intensification and eventual strength will depend on how the weather system evolves over the coming days.

Worth mentioning, the next stages of a depression are deep depression and cyclonic storm in the case of further intensification of the weather system.

Back-to-back Cyclones?

The forecast comes a day after very severe cyclonic storm 'Arnab' crossed the Andhra Pradesh and Yanam coasts. The storm made landfall between 2 am and 8 am on October 28, with maximum sustained wind speeds of 125-135 kmph and gusts reaching 150 kmph.

The latest IMD forecast indicates a possible new depression and further intensification, though it might be early to describe the system as an approaching cyclone.
