Bhubaneswar: Another migrant worker from Odisha has died after suffering critical injuries in the ammonia gas leak at a private seafood processing and export unit in Tamil Nadu, taking the death toll of Odia workers in the incident to 13.
The deceased has been identified as Budhubari Nayak (25), a resident of Andhari Sahi under Alori Gram Panchayat in Pallahara block of Odisha's Angul district. A tribal widow, she had gone to Tamil Nadu as a migrant worker in search of a livelihood.
According to reports, Budhubari was among the workers exposed to toxic ammonia fumes during the gas leak at the seafood processing factory in Kannigaipair village near Periyapalayam in Tiruvallur district on June 21. She had been undergoing treatment after sustaining serious health complications caused by the leak, but later succumbed to her injuries.
Her body was flown to Bhubaneswar last night and later transported to her native village in Pallahara. Assistant Labour Officer Michael Jujo and Khamar police handed over the body to her family at around 1 am.
The ammonia gas leak occurred at a private seafood processing and export unit where around 120 migrant workers from Odisha, Assam and Jharkhand were on duty. The suspected leak exposed workers to toxic fumes, leaving many with breathing difficulties, dizziness and eye irritation, while several collapsed inside the factory.
