Daspalla: A man died after getting caught in a trap allegedly laid by poachers to hunt wild boars in the Daspalla forest area of Odisha’s Nayagarh district on Friday night.
The deceased has been identified as Babula Nayak, a resident of Kanadi village under Duda panchayat in Banigochha police station limits.
According to local reports, Babula was on his way to visit his close friend at Nageswar Sahi on Friday night when he accidentally got caught in a snare allegedly set up by miscreants to hunt wild boars.
He reportedly cried out for help after getting trapped, but no one came to his assistance. He eventually succumbed to his injuries, according to the report.
On being informed, police reached the spot and launched an investigation. The body was subsequently sent to Daspalla Community Health Centre for a post-mortem examination.
Tragedy strikes family with one-month-old daughter
The incident has plunged the area into mourning, particularly as Babula’s daughter completed one month of age on Saturday.
The incident has also raised concerns over alleged illegal hunting activities in the Daspalla forest area. Local reports suggest that poachers have increasingly been setting traps to hunt wild animals, allegedly evading the attention of forest officials.
Questions have been raised over the forest department’s efforts to curb such activities and prevent similar tragedies.
Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding Babula’s death. Further details regarding the trap and the persons responsible are awaited.
