Sundargarh: A horrific incident of alleged violence stemming from one-sided love has left a young woman battling for her life in Odisha's Sundargarh district. The accused, identified as Rajat Kiro, has been arrested by police for allegedly setting the woman on fire after she repeatedly rejected his marriage proposal.
The incident took place in Santoshpur village under Bisra police station limits late on Friday night. The woman was sleeping alone in her house when the accused allegedly poured petrol through an open window and set the room on fire before fleeing the spot.
The victim, who was asleep at the time, was unaware of the attack until flames engulfed the room. She was trapped inside as the fire spread rapidly, burning household belongings and leaving her with nearly 70 per cent burn injuries.
Hearing her screams, family members and neighbours rushed to the scene and rescued her. She was initially admitted to the Rourkela Government Hospital (RGH). As her condition was critical, doctors referred her to Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR) at Burla.
However, the family alleged that despite reaching Burla at around 5 am, they were unable to get a hospital bed. They claimed repeated requests to hospital staff went unanswered, forcing them to return to Rourkela, nearly 200 km away. The woman was later admitted to JP Hospital around 10 am.
The delay meant the victim remained on an ambulance stretcher for more than 12 hours without proper treatment, according to her family. She is currently in critical condition and fighting for her life. Police have recorded her statement as part of the investigation.
Preliminary investigation suggests that Rajat Kiro had been pursuing the woman despite her repeated rejection of his advances. Police suspect he carried out the attack after she once again turned down his proposal.
Based on a written complaint filed by the victim's family, Bisra police have registered a case and arrested the accused. Investigators are examining whether the attack was solely motivated by one-sided love or if any other factors were involved.
The victim's parents have demanded the strictest possible punishment for the accused. Police said further investigation is underway.
