Kendrapada: A 50-year-old man died after being allegedly attacked with a wooden plank and a brick in Ramnagar village under Jambu Marine Police limits in Mahakalapada block of Odisha's Kendrapada district late on Tuesday night.

The deceased has been identified as Tapan Das (50), a resident of Ramnagar village. The accused, Sanjay Mandal of the same village, was arrested.

According to preliminary information, Sanjay was creating a disturbance in the village at around 11 pm by abusing the villagers using objectionable words. Tapan intervened and advised him not to engage in such behaviour, which led to an altercation between the two.

The accused became enraged and attacked Tapan with a wooden plank and a brick. The assault caused severe head injuries, resulting in heavy bleeding.

Tapan was immediately rushed to the Kendrapada District Headquarters Hospital in a critical condition. However, doctors declared him dead on arrival.

Following the incident, the deceased's wife, Nilu Das, lodged a written complaint at the Jambu Marine Police Station.

Acting on the complaint, police apprehended the accused and brought him to the police station for questioning.

Further inquiry into the circumstances leading to the fatal assault is underway.
