Sonepur: A newlywed woman allegedly attempted suicide by jumping into the Mahanadi River from the Mahanadi Bridge on the Sonepur-Sambalpur road on Sunday. 

She was rescued by fire services personnel and is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital.

According to officials, the woman fell into the river after jumping from the bridge. Passersby who witnessed the incident immediately alerted the Sonepur Fire Services team, which rushed to the spot and launched a rescue operation.

The woman was successfully pulled out of the water and rushed to the District Headquarters Hospital in Sonepur. Hospital sources said her condition is stable and she is under medical observation.

Preliminary reports suggest that the woman, a resident of Kainphul village under Sonepur police limits, had recently married and was out with her husband when the incident occurred.

Argument with husband allegedly led to suicide attempt

Sources said the couple had an argument over an undisclosed issue while travelling. In an attempt to calm her down, the husband reportedly stopped their motorcycle on the Mahanadi Bridge and began taking photographs.

However, during that time, the woman suddenly jumped into the river, shocking her husband and bystanders.

Fire services personnel acted swiftly after receiving information from people passing through the area and managed to rescue her from the water.

Police have begun an inquiry into the incident. Further details are awaited as authorities continue to investigate the circumstances that led to the suicide attempt.
