Bhubaneswar: Normal life was affected across Odisha on Thursday as the INDIA bloc is observing a statewide bandh over a set of demands, with road blockades and protests disrupting vehicular movement at many places.
Congress and its allies took to the streets in different parts of the state, blocking roads and staging demonstrations. The protests led to traffic disruptions and delays for commuters, particularly in major cities and towns. Protesters also staged rail roko demonstrations at some railway stations.
Emergency services exempted
Ambulance and fire services, pharmacies, milk transportation and other essential emergency services have been kept outside the ambit of the bandh.
The protesters have also been asked not to obstruct medical services, emergency operations and other essential activities.

Three key demands
The INDIA bloc has called the bandh over three main demands:
- Withdrawal of the MMDR Amendment Act, 2026: Opposition parties have demanded the repeal of the amended mining law, arguing that it could affect Odisha's mineral rights and financial interests.
- Resignation of School and Mass Education Minister Nityananda Gond: The opposition has sought his resignation over errors in school textbooks.
- Resignation and arrest of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar: The bloc has made this demand over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
Congress has said the statewide shutdown is intended to put pressure on the government to address its demands.
